Description

The Blaydon Main colliery, worked by the Stella Coal Company, is within this parish [Stella], but within the township of Winlaton, and at present working the Brockwell seam, 2 feet 10 inches, at a depth of 46 fathoms. The Hodge, or cannel seam, is being wrought at the Milner pit, Blaydon Burn, and is 3 feet 2 inches, including 22 inches of cannel coal, the depth being 14 fathoms. At the Blaydon Burn there are 400 men and boys employed, including the coke ovens at Derwenthaugh. The output is about 100,000 tons per year, principally shipped at Tyne Dock.

Atkinson, George, 10 Jan 1902, aged 17, Helper-up, deceased, who was placed to assist hand-putters to push their loaded tubs up a rising road, was waiting near the point where his duties commenced, and in some unexplained way was crushed between a full tub and a prop

      

Atkinson, James, 28 Aug 1899, aged 15, Driver, Deceased was driving a horse attached to a set of full tubs when the horse knocked out some timber causing a fall of roof. Another boy who was riding on the tub was injured [Inspection made & inquest attended]

      

Barratt, William James, 21 Jul 1910, aged 48, Deputy, electric shock

     

Barrett, John, 01 Nov 1921, aged 41, Hewer, crushed by tubs

      

Bates, Thomas, 18 Jan 1900, aged 60, Stoneman, Deceased and his marrow had blasted down part of the roof, and while engaged in making ready a shot hole in part of the fallen material, a stone fell from the roof and killed him. Probably the shot had loosened this stone, but both his marrow and another man declared that deceased had examined it after the shot was fired and considered it good. [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Clennell, Thomas, 09 Jan 1905, aged 27, Hewer, Deceased, when about to assist a putter to push a loaded tub up a slight rise, fell over and died shortly afterwards without recovering consciousness. There was nothing unusual about the place, and deceased had not actually commenced to push the tub when he collapsed. An inquest was held, after a post-mortem examination, at which four doctors were present and one of them gave evidence that they all agreed that death was due to failure of the heart's action, and so the Jury found

      

Cohan, Michael, 06 Dec 1900, aged 17, Labourer, Several waggons were being moved by means of a locomotive, and deceased, who was a waggon cleaner, was twice told to stand clear, but he stepped directly in front and five waggons passed over him. It is probable that he intended getting on to a waggon. [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Gordon, George, 20 Jun 1901, aged 45, Deputy Overman, While drawing chocks in a broken working a fall occurred between two chocks which had been set for safety in drawing. Hutchinson, Robert Henry Edward, 14 Aug 1901, aged 28, Hewer, The deceased was working in a wide bord when a stone weighing four or five tons fell from clayey joints in the roof. The deputy had examined the place twice during the shift and considered it well timbered [Inspection made & inquest attended]

      

Iley, George, 08 May 1899, aged 59, Stoneman, He was knocked down a staple by a set of full tubs, which he had carelessly neglected to secure before taking away the first one to put into the cage. Another man who was loading timber on the cage at the staple-bottom was also injured [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Robson, Joseph, 08 Oct 1906, aged 55, Shifter, Deceased was sitting in a cabin at the entrance to the Mary drift, resting before he went inbye to work, when he suddenly fell over and became unconscious and died. He had had an accident in the adjoining Clara Vale Colliery some years ago, and was an ailing man. There was no suggestion of any accident at the time of his death, and no inquest was held.

      

Scott, John, 29 Jan 1900, aged 47, Labourer, Five empty waggons were being pushed by a locomotive into the coke yard, in order to pick up two more empties, when deceased, who was cleaning up small coals, was run over. The engine driver did not observe deceased, but neglected to blow his whistle. [Inspection made]

Stonehouse, Robert, 27 Oct 1913, aged 14, Flatter, it was deceased's first shift underground and he was sent to a small flat to couple full tubs as they were brought out by the putters; it is supposed that he was swinging between two full tubs and fell backwards, his head catching the inside rail on the empty road

Tighe, John, 14 Feb 1902, (accident: 13 Feb 1902), aged 29, [Not Employed], deceased was seeking work, his cousin was employed loading trucks with coke and deceased offered to help ; on the truck being moved deceased was crushed between it and the loading bench ; inquest held. Verdict &ndash "Death from injuries accidentally received"

Wilson, Alfred, 22 Jul 1913, aged 34, Rolleyway-man, deceased was walking along the engine plane to his work when he was knocked down by a journey of full tubs, travelling at 10 miles per hour, as he was entering a refuge hole; the last refuge hole was only 7 yards away

Wilson, Thomas, 28 Jun 1899, aged 64, Shifter, The deceased and two others were ridding a fall in a return airway when he was knocked down by a stone, and before he could be extricated, a larger fall of roof occurred. The use of timber would no doubt have averted this accident [Inspection made & inquest attended]
