Alsop, Thomas, 08 Nov 1915, aged 67, fall of stone, address: Centre Row, Radcliffe

      

Bates, Thomas, 17 Jul 1903, (accident: 15 Jul 1903), aged 29, Shifter, Deceased was leading water with a water tub drawn by a pony. After emptying the water in tub over a dam he stepped on the sill of the dam and struck the pony to start it, and as it moved away he attempted to get on to the timbers, when his foot slipped and he was crushed between the tub and a prop.

      

Boyd, George, 02 Apr 1902, aged 62, Labourer, he was standing at the bottom of a hoist or lift when a tub fell from the top, and striking his head killed him

Brown, William S., 18 Jan 1946, (accident: 28 Nov 1945), aged 61, Gang Chargeman, beat elbow

Graham, Henry Ernest, 01 Jun 1908, aged 14, Trapper, caught by set on self-acting incline

      

Gray, Thomas, 11 Aug 1907, (accident: 24 Jul 1907), aged 55, Hewer, While drilling a shot hole in a coal seam deceased knocked the skin off the knuckle of the forefinger of his left hand. He finished his shift and worked the next day, July 25, after which he worked no more. The wound became inflamed and he saw a doctor on July 26 and was under his care until he died of blood-poisoning or septic pneumonia on August 11. An inquest was held and the Jury returned a verdict of accidental death from blood-poisoning, the result of injury to finger while at work.

      

Hall, Thomas Walter, 17 Dec 1908, aged 35, Screener, crushed between trucks at screens

      

Harbottle, George, 20 Nov 1913, aged 53, Chocking Wagons, deceased in stepping back was caught by a full wagon, which was being lowered at the time; he was crushed between the wagon and a wood brattice and died a few weeks afterwards from his injuries

Holland, Joseph, 11 May 1898, aged 67, Wasteman, Deceased and four other wastemen were travelling out-bye on the engine plane. On the approach of a full set they endeavoured to get into a refuge hole, but deceased was caught by the set. There was room by the side of the road [Inspection made & inquest attended]

May, Edward, 09 Dec 1885, aged 72, Shifter, attempting to jump on a set of tubs when they were running and fell amongst them

      

McKenzie, -, 03 Jan 1899, Putter, He was going to his work with some other lads, when he left them for some purpose, the remainder going down the pit. He was not missed, and it was not till the afternoon that his body was noticed floating in the engine pond. He would not pass it on his way to work, and had to go over a rail fence to reach it. Verdict, "Found drowned" [fatality reported during the year but not classified as a colliery accident]

      

Mossman, William, 1937, [approximate date]

      

Murray, George, 11 Mar 1901, aged 58, Deputy, A sudden fall of roof occurred while the deceased, assisted by two hewers, was engaged in drawing timber out of a jud. Before he could be liberated a second and large fall took place. The deceased was using an axe, although iron bars are provided [Inspection made & inquest attended]

      

Nesbit, William, 25 Nov 1891, 5:00 p.m., 10th hour of shift, aged 13, Trapper, after leaving the pit he was running alongside some vans on the colliery siding when he slipped and fell across the rails, the vans passing over him [Enquiry made]

      

Nichol, Thomas Dunlop, 24 Aug 1914, aged 24, Hewer, The accident happened at the face of a 5-yard bord. Deceased was kirving at the time, and he was killed by a fall of coal. He had undercut about 9 feet of face to a depth of 3 feet at one end, and tapering to nothing at the other. He had set no sprags. At the inquest, the jury added to their verdict that the accident might not have happened if the timbering rules had been properly observed.

Pierpoint, Harold Frank, 30 Oct 1940, aged 45, shock and haemorrhage and multiple bodily injuries sustained by having been accidentally run over by a coal train whilst following his employment

Richardson, James, 03 Mar 1874, aged 12, Switch Keeper, head caught against a bunton whilst ascending the shaft

      

Robertson, Robert, 23 Dec 1898, aged 25, Screener, A piece of stone fell on his toe, but he was able to walk home. An hour or two afterwards he was suddenly taken ill and died. According to the evidence of the doctor, he died from bleeding in the lungs and heart disease, resulting from the shock caused by the injury to his toe [Inquest attended]

Simpson, John George, 07 Apr 1891, 10:30 a.m., 4th hour of shift, aged 19, Rolleywayman, deceased was working an a self-acting incline, and on leaving the sets running he stepped into a refuge hole, and allowed the full tubs to pass by, but he unfortunately walked out of the refuge hole too soon, and was caught by the empty set of tubs [Inquest attended]

      

Slater, George Robert, 05 Jan 1931, Rolleyway Man, accidentally crushed against coal wall face in Broomhill Colliery by an overturned conveyor, the result of a tub having got off the way

      

Smailes, William, 1915, [approximate date]

      

Smart, William James, 02 Apr 1897, aged 32, Hewer, The deceased and his marrow were working in a "broken lift," which was considered safe by them and the chargeman. A shot had been fired and deceased began to fill the coal away whilst his marrow was hewing in the fast side. The deceased was in the act, shortly afterwards, of sounding the roof (top coal) when it and the stone above came away on him. It fell from a decided slip running along the coal face. The place appeared to have been properly timbered [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Tate, William, 25 Jun 1894, 4:00 p.m., 7th hour of shift, aged 28, Hewer, He was attempting to get into the workmen's carriages when in motion, and fell under the wheels [Inspection made]

Taylor, Thomas, 14 Apr 1946, aged 63, Timber Repairer, killed by a fall of stone

      

Thompson, George, 1928, [approximate date]

      

Tinkler, John George, 10 Oct 1904, (accident: 18 Mar 1904), aged 62, Deputy, While deceased was altering the timber in order to lay rails in a lift in the broken workings of the Top seam, some stone and shaley coal fell from the roof upon him and bruised his shoulder and hip. He was off work a day or two and then worked for a month, always complaining of pain. On April 25 the doctor ordered him to bed, and 5 weeks later he was taken to Newcastle Infirmary, where he remained 5 weeks but was not operated on. He was brought home and was confined to bed until his death. An inquest was held and medical evidence given that deceased died of exhaustion due to the growth of a malignant disease of the pelvis caused by the injury in the pit, and so the Jury found

Tulley, Robert, 24 Feb 1891, 2:00 p.m., 7th hour of shift, aged 15, Driver, found crushed by a fall between tub and the coal wall side [Inquest attended]

Wilkinson, William, 1929, [approximate date]

     

Wilson, Joseph, 06 Dec 1864, (accident: 25 Nov 1864), Fireman, He "attended the engine which pumped the air out of the mine"; on 25 Nov. he was using a lever to restart the engine when it kicked back and severely crushed his leg. The fracture was set, but Wilson failed to recover and died on the 6th

Wright, Isaac, 08 Jan 1894, 2:00 p.m., 8th hour of shift, aged 51, Cartman, Deceased was unwisely riding on the top of a cart of hay when the horse took fright, and, before he could pull it up, he was caught against some steam pipes under which he had to pass [Inquest attended]
