Description

At Bowburn Colliery the Busty, Beaumont and Harvey seams are worked, the first two being coking coals. From the three seams the output is 2,900 tons a day, and it is worthy of note that 60 per cent. of the output is from seams of 2 ft. or less in thickness. About 75 per cent, of the coal is machine won. It is in this pit that a pneumatic suction plant is in service for handling the coal from the winning headings.

In 1931-2 the surface plant was entirely reconstructed, a new washing plant consisting of a Baum washer of 135 tons per hr. and new grading and classifying screens were installed. The washer is designed to produce smalls, singles and doubles, the last two named going for gas and domestic use.
