Description

The population of this parish [Hedworth] is almost entirely made up of miners engaged at the Harton Coal Company's Boldon colliery. The royalties are leased under the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, and the seams being worked are the Bensham, 5 feet 4 inches thick, and the Hutton, 3 feet 11 inches thick ; the former being 230 fathoms and the latter 254 fathoms deep. A large trouble passes near the shaft, which causes the seams to be thrown to a depth of 268 and 292 fathoms respectively. The plant consists of two powerful winding-engines, and the extensive arrangements for screening and other purposes are all fitted with modern appliances. The daily output is about 2000 tons, and the number of men and boys is upwards of 1600.

Boldon Colliery is a large village, comprising over 500 miners' cottages, as well as several good shops, and there are chapels belonging to the Wesleyans, Primitives, Free Church and Lay Church, and the parish church being a little to the north west. This village is about a mile north from West Boldon, and three miles south of Jarrow. There is a railway junction at Brockley Whins, which is the nearest railway station.

The Miners' Hall, situated at the south entrance to the village, is a handsome building of brick, with ornamentation of stone. It was erected in 1892, at a cost of £2000, and comprises a large lecture hall, which will seat 1000 people, in addition to which are several smaller rooms.

Institute and Reading Room - A working men's institute has for many years been established here, which is at present held in rooms granted by the colliery owners. There is a small library, with about 300 volumes, a reading and a bagatelle and recreation room. This institute will shortly be transferred to more commodious premises, and will occupy the Wesleyan chapel when that body erect their new chapel.
