Description

Though situated in the midst of collieries which ship their coals on the Tyne, being about 8 miles south-south-west from Newcastle, yet the Beamish coals are sent, by means of fixed engines, inclined planes, and horses, to Fatfield on the Wear, a distance of about 6 miles. This colliery was commenced in 1763, by Morton Davidson, Esq., from whose family the "Grand Allies" held the lease for many years; and is now the property of Sir Robert Eden, Bart. There are several winnings, varying in depth from 50 to 80 fathoms. The High Main, or Shield Row seam, as it is here called, is now being worked, and is about 4 feet thick. The Hutton and Low Main seams have also been partially worked. The various engines employed are of from 20 to 40 horse power. A water-wheel is turned by the water drawn by a level from the upper seam, and has been used for draining the lower seams; but it has latterly been found insufficient for that purpose. Of late years, the Beamish district has been only partially worked, other pits having been commenced at Stanley, further to the west.

Views of the Collieries (1844)

This manor abounds in coal of excellent quality, which is being extensively worked by numerous collieries. Some of the seams are remarkably thick, whilst the total of the combined seams gives a thickness of 40 feet of coal.

The Air pit, sunk in 1849, is working the Shields Row, at a depth of 130 feet, which is 4 feet 4 inches to 6 feet thick, with 3 to 6 inches of band. The Low Main here is 4 feet 6 inches thick and 546 feet deep, the Hutton being 582 feet deep and 3 feet 6 inches thick. The New Low Main, same depth as the last named, is 10 feet thick, with 2 feet of band. The Mary pit was sunk in 1883, and works the Busty Bank at a depth of 760 feet, having a thickness of 4 feet 6 inches to 9 feet, with from 1 foot to 34 inches of band. A large quantity of coke is made here, which, with the pits, gives a total of nearly 1200 men and boys employment.

At Beamish Second Pit, the Low Main, 59 fathoms, 4 feet, and the Hutton, 64 fathoms, 3 feet 8 inches in thickness, are worked, having an output of 700 tons per day, employing 320 men and boys.
