Names of those killed at this colliery
Please note that this collection of names is by no means complete!
| | | | | | | Barns, Joseph, 01 Jun 1902, (accident: 30 May 1902), aged 38, Rolleyway Man, deceased was head rolleywayman and foolishly put his hand and arm inside a friction clutch in connection with the haulage machinery ; while in this position the rope was restarted, and the deceased's arm was torn off ; the accident occurred about 12 yards from the code of signals, on which it was distinctly stated that certain signals were to be given to the engineman before any oiling or alteration of the machinery was attempted ; deceased had omitted to carry out these instructions |
| | | | | | | Bell, Richard, 30 May 1910, aged 28, Hewer, killed by a fall of stone |
| | | | | | | Brown, Wilfrid, 27 Oct 1899, aged 27, Hewer, The deceased was in the act of setting a prop at a longwall face when a cauldron bottom fell from a glassy parting. One or two props, which had been set the previous day under the stone, were improperly removed by the shifters to make room for a pack-wall, which was, however, not built up to the roof [Inspection made & inquest attended] |
| | | | | | | Buchannan, Joseph, 16 Sep 1878, aged 18, Hewer, killed by a fall of stone |
| | | | | | | Cass, Joseph, 09 Dec 1913, aged 39, Haulageman, whilst assisting a timberer to put up a crosshead, a fall took place, owing to the props supporting the old crosshead being undermined to put in the new props; deceased was instantly killed |
| | | | | | | Connell, James, 08 Aug 1920, aged 55, Buried: Bromfield Churchyard |
| | | | | | | Cowen, John Parker, 28 Sep 1906, (accident: 26 Sep 1906), aged 38, Joiner, killed by machinery [More information ...] |
| | | | | | | Davidson, Isaac, 03 Sep 1878, aged 29, Hewer, killed by a fall of stone |
| | | | | | | Fletcher, Isaac, 02 May 1900, aged 35, Shifter, Deceased and his marrow were engaged at a longwall face building a pack-wall. The roof was very treacherous and full of slips, and on this account so closely timbered that he was probably prevented from getting clear of the fall, which canted out three props. [Inspection made & inquest attended] |
| | | | | | | Graham, Joseph, 11 Apr 1907, aged 18, Packer, Deceased was engaged in building packs in longwall workings in the Clutch Brow District of No. 3 Dip, in the Yard band, at a point where the face was advancing at right angles to the old longwall face. A stone, 5 foot by 1 foot 3 inches and 2 feet thick fell upon him from above the coal, and extending to the face, killing him instantly. The stone had a free side next the old goaf, and this, with a slip and a breaker, made it practically free all round. A prop and head was canted out. There was loose timber close at hand to set. The deputy had been in the place an hour before the accident, when all appeared safe. |
| | | | | | | Graham, William, 10 Jul 1897, aged 27, Brusher, Fall of stone. Two other men were with the deceased at the time. It appears a shot had been fired, and they were breaking up the stone for packing, when a large stone fell. The roof had been carefully examined by the men and a deputy after the shot, and no danger was apprehended. It was not a place where props were considered necessary, but there were plenty at hand if required. The stone, which would weigh nearly one ton and a half, came away from an ordinary longwall break, thick at one end and tapering to nothing [Inspection made & inquest attended] |
| | | | | | | Graves, Joseph, 08 Dec 1904, (accident: 05 Jul 1904), aged 43, Shiftman, While deceased and another shiftman, the overman also being present, were making a place for a small haulage and pumping plant by the side of the main haulage road in the Yard Band, a stone about 2 feet square and 6 inches thick fell from the roof and rebounding from a chock struck his knee. He never worked afterwards. The doctors who attended him found no external wound, but the knee joint was seriously injured, and on November 25 he was operated on and five pieces of broken bone removed. He did not do well after the operation, and eventually died from septic pneumonia, the result of the operation, rendered necessary by the accident |
| | | | | | | Hayton, Thomas, 10 Jul 1877, aged 18, Putter, explosion of gas from the firing of a shot |
| | | | | | | Hodgson, Frank, 06 Aug 1899, (accident: 20 Jun 1899), aged 69, Labourer, He was standing on a screen shovelling coals into a barrow when he slipped and fell a distance of five feet. He died on August 6th [Inspection made] |
| | | | | | | Holliday, Walter, 22 Nov 1907, aged 51, Packer [More information ...] |
| | | | | | | James, William, 06 Jun 1907, aged 39, Hewer [More information ...] |
| | | | | | | Lancaster, Christopher, 22 Feb 1881, aged 35, Hewer, killed by a fall of coal |
| | | | | | | Lawman, William, 23 Jun 1893, 6:15 p.m., 5th hour of shift, aged 24, Hewer, While the deceased was working at the coal, a large stone fell from between "slips" on one side, and a fracture near the face on the other side, on to him. The place was examined and reported safe by the deputy only a few minutes before the accident happened [Inspection made & inquest attended] |
| | | | | | | Lightfoot, Joseph, 19 Jul 1894, 12:15 a.m., 3rd hour of shift, aged 59, Packer, This man was killed by a fall of stone whilst engaged packing in a longwall face. He had only been in the place a few minutes. The place was considered safe [Inspection made & inquest attended] |
| | | | | | | Lightfoot, Thomas, 23 Sep 1885, aged 55, Hewer, fall of roof while drawing timber |
| | | | | | | Little, Richard, 11 Jan 1895, 10:30 p.m., 1st hour of shift, aged 40, Shiftman, deceased was proceeding along an engine plane to his work when a tub ran down an incline from some men who were taking in timber, and struck him, killing him on the spot |
| | | | | | | Lowther, William, 02 Oct 1913, aged 28, Hewer, whilst deceased was trailing, a fall, caused by a burst from the roof owing to working going alongside the goaf and touching a fault, fell on to him |
| | | | | | | Matthews, Mason, 19 Apr 1900, aged 62, Shifter, He was cleaning up on the haulage road when a flag of stone about 6 ins. thick and 16 ft. long fell, causing fracture of the skull and spine. The stone was of a tough nature and it had not been considered necessary to timber it. [Inspection made & inquest attended] |

| | | | | | | Preston, George, 17 Nov 1911, aged 50, Packer, walked on to shot |
| | | | | | | Robinson, Harris, 29 Aug 1904, aged 64, Deputy, while deceased was walking down a slightly dipping road, and when opposite the horizontal return wheel of an endless rope haulage placed about 18 inches above the pavement, he slipped on one of the rails or on a wet sleeper and fell on his back and his feet flew up, and although the top and side of the wheel was well fenced, one of his feet went under the fence and was caught between the rope and wheel and cut off |
| | | | | | | Scott, Archibald, 18 Jul 1908, aged 53, Hewer, crushed against door frame by engine set |
| | | | | | | Stalker, Joseph Wilkinson, 15 Jun 1901, aged 51, Washer Attendant, The deceased was standing between two empty waggons, attending to the small coal hopper from which coals were being elevated to the washer. Another workman in bringing a full waggon along lost control over it, with the result that it joined up against the first empty waggon, and crushed deceased against the second one [Inspection made & inquest attended] |
| | | | | | | Tiffin, Edward, 06 Apr 1897, aged 56, Underground Engineman, He descended the shaft about 8 p.m. and signalled that he was all right. About 10 o'clock some workmen were being lowered, and, on nearing the bottom, felt the cage strike something, which turned out to be the deceased whose head was partly under the cage. It is thought that he had taken a fit. Everything was in order at bottom [Inspection made & inquest attended] |
| | | | | | | Williamson, John, 25 Jan 1888, aged 47, Shifter, working on engine plane and attempted to pull signal wire when set was passing and was caught by tubs |
