| | | | | | | Milling, Thomas, 23 Aug 1893, 10:20 a.m., 5th hour of shift, aged 67, Deputy, The roof near the working face being bad, a centre prop was set, which afterwards had to be taken out, and it was whilst the deceased was preparing to do this that a fall of stone took place from several "slips" and caught him [Inquest attended] |
| | | | | | | Pollock, W., 20 Apr 1895, Collier, found dead at the bottom of the pit; he had no business near the place, and as the pit was well protected it was surmised that he had purposely got over the fence [fatality reported during the year but not classified as a colliery accident] |
| | | | | | | Simm, Alfred, 21 Sep 1900, aged 15, Asistant Banksman, He and another boy were engaged in filling small coal into tubs and putting them into the cage just below the surface level, in order that the coals might be drawn up to the level of the heapstead. He evidently thought the cage was at the opening ready to receive the tub, and he fell with the latter down the shaft. [Inspection made & inquest attended] |
| | | | | | | Todd, John, 12 Mar 1897, aged 42, Deputy, The deceased was a night-shift deputy, and as he had only a few men in the pit was working temporarily at the pit-top with the tubs. The mouth of the shaft is protected by moving bars, and, it was his duty to see that they were down after the cage had left the top. He appears to have worked for some time, and had neglected to put one of these bars down, and, in shoving a tub towards the shaft for the cage, he found himself at the wrong side, and he and the tub went down to the bottom. The accident happened at night, but it was said there was sufficient light at the place. The bars were in working order [Inspection made & inquest attended] |
