Barrass, William, 13 Apr 1904, (accident: 26 Dec 1902), aged 32, Deputy, Deceased and another deputy were drawing timber in the goaf a few feet back from the face of longwall workings in the Yard seam, when a stone 4 feet by 3 feet and 7 inches thick suddenly fell upon him, and broke his back. They were only using the axe and had not with them "an appliance ready for use suitable for drawing timber without undue risk," as required by one of the new Timbering Special Rules which were then in force. Deceased was never able to move again, and eventually died from acute inflammation of the kidneys the result of the accident. An inquest was held

      

Beal, Thomas Watson, 14 Feb 1898, aged 45, Stoneman, Deceased was found lying in the middle of the way with his neck dislocated, but there was no evidence to show how the accident had occurred [Inspection made & inquest attended]

      

Bell, John, 17 Nov 1894, aged 65, Blacksmith, died suddenly from apoplexy in the smith's shop

      

Bell, John Thomas, 06 Dec 1893, (accident: 23 Nov 1893, 8:30 a.m., 2nd hour of shift), aged 17, Putter, It was said that the deceased was injured by some planks falling on him which had been knocked out by the pony. The case does not seem to have been reported to any of the officials at the time, and the deceased continued at his work for a few days, when he was taken ill, and died on the 6th December [Inquest attended]

Cowell, Joseph, 12 Jun 1902, aged 58, Hewer, this accident occurred at the face opposite the gateway in the Yard seam where the coal is undercut by a coal cutting machine ; deceased shot the coal down and filled it into tubs ; a large stone, bounded by slips, and fell away when the coal was taken out ; no props appear to have been placed under the newly exposed roof

Davison, Joseph Cowen, 13 Apr 1923, aged 37, killed whilst working on the screens, he was trapped by his legs in working machinery; he was taken to Ashington Hospital but they did not have the facilities to treat the particular injuries he suffered, he was therefore transferred to the RVI but died on the way

Garbutt, Robert, 26 Feb 1902, (accident: 09 Feb 1902), aged 46, Shifter, inquest held and the jury found "The said Robert Garbutt died at Ashington on the 26th day of February, 1902, from cardiac failure excited by a wrench he accidentally received through using a hammer in the Ashington Colliery on the 9th day of February, 1902." ; no post mortem examination was made ; deceased's widow sued the Ashington Coal. Co., for compensation in the County Court, but was non-suited, the Court finding that the injury was caused by the use of the mall used in the usual and proper way, and that no fortuitous or unexpected circumstance arose in connection with that use, other than the injury itself

Gilroy, James, 21 Sep 1899, aged 13, Flatter, Some boys were descending and when nearing the bottom it is supposed that the deceased put his head out and was crushed between the cage and a bunton [Inspection made & inquest attended]

      

Goldsbury, Edward, 04 Sep 1903, aged 14, Driver, Deceased was driving outbye on the limbers with 11 loaded tubs when he should only have had six. The road dipped outbye. He stopped at a point and took some drags out and then started again and appears to have come too fast; the pony was thrown or fell down and some of the tubs overturned and crushed deceased. The Local Inspectors reported the facts and said: "We found the way in good order and plenty of room, also plenty of height."

Hall, John, 05 Apr 1902, aged 59, Stoneman, died 5th April, 1902 (more than a year after the accident), bruised chest and elbow caused by being struck with haulage rope ; inquest held and jury returned the following verdict "The said John Hall died at Ashington on the 5th April from Capillary Bronchitis, the result of, and due to an accident received by him when at work at the Ashington Colliery on the 15th day of December, 1898."

Holland, James, 15 May 1903, aged 62, Hewer, Deceased was hewing alone in a lift in the broken or pillar workings of the Low Main seam when a piece of coal, ramble and top coal, fell off the face on to him from an unseen slippy back, and so injured him that he died a few minutes after being brought to the surface. The place had been inspected by the deputy in accordance with the regulations. The Local Inspectors reported with reference to the fatality, "in our opinion the same was an accident which no one could foresee, the coal having come off at a lie over back."

Longstaff, Peter Richardson, 18 Feb 1958, aged 51, he was killed as a result of a mishap with a set of wagons on the surface

      

Luke, George, 07 May 1895, 7:45 a.m., 3rd hour of shift, aged 27, Stoneman, deceased had lighted a shot which did not go off in the usual time, and probably thinking that it had hung fire, returned too soon, and was killed by the explosion of the charge

Moore, Hugh John, 06 Feb 1903, (accident: 30 Jan 1903), aged 35, Hewer, It was asserted that deceased had strained himself whilst at work, but no definite evidence as to this could be obtained. He was taken ill while at work and had to be helped outbye. On being examined by a doctor he was found to be suffering from strangulated hernia and was sent to the Infirmary at Newcastle-on-Tyne, where he was operated on, but he did not recover. The jury found that he died from strangulated hernia, but how it was caused there was no evidence to show.

Patterson, Thomas, 28 Mar 1904, aged 7, [Not employed - Infant], The colliery company have laid lines of tramways along the rows of colliery houses, and coal for the workmen's use is led along them in small wagons. As the boy, accompanied by his mother, was walking along a main street four wagons laden with coal were being drawn by a horse in charge of a driver along a tramway in a back street crossing the main street at right angles, and deceased was run over by them

Penman, Robert, 01 Sep 1913, (accident: 28 Aug 1913), aged 38, Coal Filler, deceased had left his working place to fetch some gear and sat waiting at the junction of the gate and crossheading to allow a pony putter to drive past the gate end; whilst in this position a stone fell, 3 feet by 3 feet by 10 inches, causing injuries from which he died on 1st September; bearing bars are set when the gates are turned in, but these are usually withdrawn when the roof has settled on the packs; a bearing bar should have been set in this case

Share, Joseph, 18 May 1898, aged 15, Driver, He was found hanging by a rope from one of the baulks or timbers in a roadway in the Yard seam. He was quite dead. From the evidence it appeared that the lads had been in the habit of amusing themselves by swinging from this baulk, and the deceased, who was alone, had apparently made a false step and his head was caught in a noose of the rope. The jury returned a verdict that "death was due to dislocation of the neck, caused by hanging through misadventure"
