Certificates of Competency and of Service

Select the first letter of the surname required from the menu above.

This section of the site contains all those persons who obtained either a First or Second Class Certificate of Competency under the Coal Mines Regulation Acts that were granted before 1911. This section covers the whole of the UK although we DO NOT have any further details for anyone who worked outside of County Durham, Northumberland or Cumberland. We also DO NOT have any details for certificates granted after 1910.

This list has been compiled from two documents published by the Home Office in 1896 and 1911, showing all those who had either passed an examination for a First Class Certificate (Manager) or Second Class Certificate (Under Manager) and shows the District in which they passed their examination, the date and number of the Certificate received. In addition to those who passed an examination the list also includes those who were granted a Certificate by means of the length of Service as a Manager they had when the Coal Mines Regulation Act came into force.

Please Note: It was quite common for an individual to pass the examination for a Second Class Certificate then having obtained that, the same individual may sit the First Class examination a year or two later.

We also have some sample examination papers online:    Examination Papers
