Two men reported missing were later found to have left the pit safely.
Mr. Thomas Hood, of Ayre Street, Easington, was blown off his feet by the explosion. He made his way to the surface and handed in his lamp. Later, when shown a newspaper listing him as missing, he reported to the colliery.
After the explosion, Mr. Thomas Newton, of Warkworth Avenue, Horden, handed in the lamp given to him as a substitute for his own which was being repaired. The face that he was not using his own lamp was apparently overlooked, and he was reported
among the missing.
