Awarded the British Empire Medal (Civil Division) :—
Isaac Squires, Coal Filler, Cambois Colliery, Northumberland.
A fall of roof occurred at Cambois Colliery, Northumberland, and Squires and two other men were trapped, one of these being badly injured. Squires and the uninjured man immediately set to work to move the debris and direct the rescuers on the other side
of the fall. After two hours a narrow opening was made through the debris and a morphia ampoule syringe was passed through. Under the instructions of a doctor, Squires gave the injured man an injection of morphia and then continued to give directions to
the rescue team. After four hours the men were released.
Squires showed initiative and leadership under very unnerving circumstances.
