Colliery Accidents

Ten Lives Lost

An accident, resulting in the loss of eight lives, occurred at Busty Colliery, Medomsley, Durham, on Saturday morning. It is stated that as a cage was ascending the shaft a large stone fell on to it, breaking the detaching hook. The cage dropped to the bottom of the shaft with its eight occupants, who were killed. The men's names are :- Thomas Cant (Overseer), Thomas Hornsby (assistant overseer). J. Bogue, Frank O'Hanlon, Joseph Smith, Thomas Dennis O'Neil, Thomas Thornburn, Joseph Cooper, miners, all of Consett. Cant and Hornsby were married, but all the others were single.

James Brookes, 47, of Blaina, and his son, Arthur James Brookes, 16, were killed by a fall of roof at North Blaina Colliery on Saturday afternoon while engaged in repair work.
