Eighteen of the victims of the Haig pit explosion were buried yesterday amid moving and impressive scenes. Ten were interred in one long grave at the village of Hensingham, near Whitehaven. Mr. J. A. Grant, M.P., Mr. T. Cape, M.P., Mr.
Myles Kennedy, High Sheriff of Lancashire, and Colonel Jackson, chairman of the colliery company, were present, as well as the Mayor of Whitehaven. In another Cumberland village the funeral of George McCreadie and his two sons took
place, and there were two funerals in another part of the district.
Three additional bodies were recovered yesterday. The Mayor of Whitehaven's relief fund now stands at several thousand pounds, and includes a contribution of £2,000 from the Whitehaven Colliery Company.
