An official statement was prepared yesterday at the offices of the St. Helen's Colliery Company, Workington, of the numbers of the families of the married men who were killed or seriously injured by the explosion on Thursday last. The figures show a
total of 109 members of families, of whom 25 are described as non-dependant upon the deceased, and 34 as being dependant. It has been decided to ask the high sheriff of the county (Mr. Carwen, of Workington) to promote the relief fund. A meeting
is also to be held at Maryport, and measur4es are being taken to obtain subscriptions from various parts of the country. The work of flooding the mine has progressed favourably. A large additional supply of water was obtained yesterday from a
neighbouring reservoir, and supplies have been secured from other sources. The management are not yet able to say whether the fire in the pit has been extinguished. Several funerals took place yesterday and everywhere the deepest sympathy is expressed
with the sufferers from the calamity. The two men who are lying injured in the Workington Infirmary are still in a precarious state.
