Interest in this accident has greatly subsided. No more than 100 persons were assembled about the pit head yesterday, notwithstanding a rumour that the entombed men had answered calls. This report is not correct. The explorers have called from time to
time, but no answer of any description has been received, although they are within hearing, the exploring parties only being some few yards from the face of the coal where the men are.
Mr. Bell, Government Inspector, has received a telegram from the Home Secretary asking for details, and has replied by telegram and letter that the water is still subsiding, but that it is more than probable that it will be Sunday before the
bodies are reached.
After a long consultation of the viewers yesterday afternoon it was decided to continue their efforts to recover the bodies of the men. No hope is entertained of rescuing them alive.
